Speed Dial 911 Causing False Alarms

The RCMP is asking people not to add 911 to their speed dial because of a high volume of pocket dials and false alarms. The Mounties responded to 20 false alarms over the last 48 hours, taking up a large amount of time and resources. Staff Sergeant Boyd Merrill says most of the calls come from security systems, but some also come as the result of pocket dials or children playing with phones that have 911 on speed dial.

He says if you are in an emergency, 911 is fairly easy to dial. In the meantime, if you have a home or business security system, it's important to pay close attention to avoid false alarms.

He says if you accidentally trip off your own alarm it's important to let your provider know right away so it doesn't prompt a police response.
